The name of the band is Tennis and the guitar player looks like my twin brother. WTF?
Not sure if this is a sign from God or just a coincidence. Either way i may start to actually try to learn how to play guitar now. My uncle got me into the kinks and all kinds of good music from the 60's, along with all my cool Minneapolis friends that are all in bands. I've also been going to concerts the last 10 years, so clearly I've had plenty of influence. The problem has just been the motivation when i pick that guitar up. I guess this could be my new years resolution. I'll keep y'all posted.

Regardless this band is awesome and reminds me of beach house and best coast. Their brief story about sailing and how that met in school is pretty fascinating in the interview. Go buy this record as it's set to be one of the best in 2011. Tennis will release their debut album Cape Dory on January 18 through Fat Possum Records. Currently touring in Europe they'll be back in the US soon to tour for a few months leading up to SXSW! Can't wait to see them there!

A new life in New Orleans

Hello fellow music fans. I took once again another summer/fall off. I enjoyed unemployment, hanging out with bands, and spending one last summer in Minnesota with friends/family. I now live 30 minutes north of New Orleans right on lake ponchartrain in a suburban city called Slidell. It's a 90,000+ family town with some cool restaurants. I work at Cross Gates Family Fitness and I run the junior tennis program there. People down here in the south have been a lot more down to earth than anyone I've every been around in my life. Except for maybe a few cool folks i know. From my roommate, people I work with, my boss, couchsurfers, random people I've met, everyone has been very welcoming and genuine.

I still go to concerts mostly in New Orleans and some of the upcoming shows I'm really looking forward to in the next month are Mumford and Sons, Frightened Rabbit, Portugal the Man, Built to Spill, and maybe a few more. I recently saw the Love Language from Raleigh North Carolina in a really cool place called the circle bar near downtown New Orleans.

Band of Horses 3rd album Infinite Arms was produced by Band of Horses with additional production from Phil Ek and mixed by Dave Sardy, its songs projecting the essence of the different locales across America that became the setting for its recording and songwriting process. The Free Energy bus broke down on their way to Minneapolis, but that didn't stop these ex minnesotans from making it back to the land of 10,000. Former members of the local band Hockey Night, now Free Energy currently are kicking it in Philly. I had seen them live in the past as Hockey Night and Free Energy and man they have found a nitch in dance rock pop culture. This

Free Energy recently released the latest record on tape cassette, and let me tell you "Album of the Summer". Every freaking song on this tape is a hit and gets everyone to show of their very own Free Energy dance moves.

I've heard tonights show is sold out, but highly suggest trying to get in to see this guys. It is very rare to see a band like this at such a in your face setting at the 400 bar. I also heard from the lead guitarist they're recording all day today in Minneapolis before the second show and take off for california.

I attended this festival last year and believe me it's a great atmosphere. You have the option to stay in a hotel or camp. It's a nice warmup for all the midwest folks before lollapalooza in Chicago August 6-8th. 80-35 in Des Moines is still two full days and has a great variety of bands all over the country.

Mumford and Sons Show of the Year @ Varsity Theater 5/25/10

Well over seven hundred packed in the Varsity Theater, this much anticipated show had been sold out for well over 6 months. $300 tickets were being bought on Craigslist days before to add to the excitement and amount of die hard fans at this show. If you spent the money, were dripping with sweat at the show, and waited in line the rain it was all worth it.
Mumford and Sons hands down put on the best show of the year in Minneapolis. After the very first track it felt like we were screaming for an encore in the crowd. Openers, "The Middle East jumped out at the end of "Roll Away Your Stone" and Mumford and Company even played a Neil Young tune.

Looking back at Marcus Mumford musical career it's been quite a debut bang. Now dating Laura Marling and headlining sold out shows all over the world, this guy is on top of the world. It's funny, because when I first met him in NYC he was very shy and was kind of the dark guy in the background playing drums for Marling. It won't surprise me if Mumford and Sons are playing at the State Theater next time their back in town, but hopefully it will be at First Avenue.

Above is corky openers Maps and Atlases. Lead Singer Dave Davison has a really unique voice, almost like he's singing into a distorted microphone. People call their music math-rock so I guess you could call his voice a calculator voice. Anyways the point is as bad as that sounds, he's voice is phenomenal and it really grows on you throughout the show. Coming from Chicago this band has stood the test of time touring for the lest 6 years with all sorts of bands. I have a feeling this could be a break out tour for them. I'm not a fan at all of banging instruments/experimental type music, but I love these guys. Which just goes to show you how talented they really are if they get me to enjoy a genre of music that I normally can't stand. I still don't think anyone can turn me into country or screamo, thats pretty much impossible.

These Scottish Folk-Rockers sure know how to put on a show. Yea the lead singer had a thick accent and all the girls would scream and giggle whenever he talked. But once they played music everyone was pretty much at awe. Snow Patrol, We Were Promised Jet Packs, and Glasvegas all come to mind because their all Scottish when making comparisons to Frightened Rabbit. The difference between FR and all the other Scottish bands is they keep the pace up with their sound and every slow song they play builds up. Yea the start of their slower material can get a little dull but with 4 guys playing guitar they usually make it interesting real quick. Most bands that gain hype have a big single or get a song on a car commercial, these guys like Mumford and Sons are getting the airplay on radio stations and the recognition they deserve. Quickly getting peoples attention from word of mouth and good show reviews has probably helped as well. Not a big fan of the "Winter of Mixed Drinks" album, but trust me everyone needs to see this band live. Set list is below, Enjoy!

Kate Nash still put on yet again another solid show despite her sprained ankle. This was the first show she didn't have to use crutches and stood most of the show. Thats impressive my friend. Personally I love the happy catchy pop melodies mixed with guitar and piano, unfortunately Kate still likes to lash out trying to blend a punk side to her. Don't get me wrong I would want to rock out to if I was a musician but her heavy experiemental like tunes just give me a headache. The majority of the show was great though, playing most of the tracks off her recentley released album "My Best Friend Is You". Kate is also still dating the lead singer of the Cribs Ryan Jarman, which will always keep her into music. Let's just hope she stays away from a punk album.

The Most Serene Republic was missing their female singer. Not sure if she left the band? They still keep that fresh indie sound. My guess would be that their from out east somewhere, but Ontario Canada is where they reside. Annuals opened and were more of a co headliner. Their bass player Mike Robinson did a nice interview with Chris Deline on Culuture Bully last time they were in Minneapolis here.

Sia arrived on stage with a glowing unicorn light-up horn on her head. The horn lit up in different colors, controlled by a switch, during her intro song, "The Fight". This is followed by her previous intro song, "Buttons", the hidden gem off of Some People Have Real Problems.

A lot of her songs on this set was from her forth-coming album, We Are Born, to be released in June by Jive Records. Based on what I've heard, they are really quite good. Particularly impressed by "Clap Your Hands" and "The Codependent".

Lead Vocalists, Peter Hayes and Robert Been sound very similar and blend all kinds of styles together. I always compared these guys to The Dandy Warhols blended with some White Stripes/ Raconteurs. But in this last set they sounded like a new-wave UK band.
Bands such as Kasabian, The Subways, and Arctic Monkeys all came to mind tonight.
The Bass Guitar and Harmonica stick out the most in BRMC's live set.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club played a lengthy set like always, making sure everyone gets their
money's worth. Every song gets better during the set, and would have played a 25 minute set if
they had the time. First Ave. has a DJ/Dance Party called Too Much Love every Saturday Night
that takes priority. BRMC also just released a record titled, " Beat The Devil's Tattoo".

About 1,500 bands landed in Austin, Texas, for SXSW... playing from Monday to Sunday (official start day was Wednesday). Brody takes us through his adventure.

Favorite bands from SXSW this year, Brody said were: The Kissaway Trail from Denmark (whom we just saw last Tuesday), The Boxer Rebellion from England, and Frightened Rabbit from Scotland.

Also, it looks like VV Brown will be massive and look for a collaboration with Blonde Redhead and The Kissaway Trail in the near future.

After getting back from SXSW I thought it was going to be a while before I witnessed a great show. Man was I wrong. Just look at this band above, they just look like the coolest band ever. The Kissaway Trail all the way from Denmark has been a big buzz band in Filter magazine. If you bring a cut poster of the them in the magazine, they buy you a drink and a tattoo! How cool is that? I didn't get a tattoo, maybe next time. Besides finding brilliant ways to draw attention and promote themselves this band is truly amazing live.
Yes they've been compared to the Flaming Lips and Polyphonic Spree but they've found their own little niche and are rolling with it. Thomas L. Fagerlund and Søren B. Corneliussen carry the load on vocals and compliment each other in every track. It will only be a matter of time before these guys blow up. Opening for the Arcade Fire or Flaming Lips? I'd say sold out shows with the Temper Trap across the states will do the trick. Interview with the band to come up shortly! Stay Tuned!

Looking at Dougie Mandagi above, not only does he sound as good as Prince he even looks like him! Oh yes, all the girls were drooling over this guy the entire show. But luckily instead of singing along everyone in the sold out crowd just whipped out their dance moves for the entire set. The Temper Trap has found stardom through TV shows and commercials, but deserve all the recognition with there kind of talent. Lead singer Mandagi is one of the top performers I've seen in a long time. Every move he makes and position he's in is a picture perfect shot. It's almost as if he's communicating with his arms the entire show. Make way folks for THE TEMPER TRAP!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again to everyone that came with in the RV. Nothing beats taking an RV down to awesome. Hearing "Wicked Awesome", Looking at Gabe's beard, and seeing Pete's face covered in green made me laugh historically.

Brody is our guest host, updating us on some of the shows he's been seeing: Alberta Cross and Dar...

Citizen Cope is famous and he is loved. That's evident at the two recent sold-out show at The Varsity Theater (the beautiful venue is huge, so selling out the place is pretty impressive*). From what I've gathered, most of the people there last night was also at Saturday's sold-out show, stating that it was also quite crowded on Saturday.

The audience was surprisingly younger, about college age, a contrast to Gomez's parental audience. What this generally means is that it gets rowdier and people tend to drink and act rude and don't mind pushing/crushing you. I couldn't really brave the front and eventually left and watch the rest of the show at a safe distance.

Citizen Cope's been steadily gaining fans since signing with DreamWorks Records, a division of the movie company of the same name. So it's no surprise that you'll find much of Cope's music on television and commericals. From a quick scan, I noticed his music's been used in quite a few HBO shows, so even if you haven't heard of Citizen Cope, you're likely to have heard his music.

When Cope took the stage at eight, the crowd went nuts. Citizen Cope looks tense and serious, while his backup band looks smiley, but dressed and plays like they belong in a blues band.

He started his set with "Comin' Back", followed by "Let The Drummer Kick". I don't have the setlist (I don't think they actually had any on stage). The rest was a blur, but I do recall hearing "Hurricane Waters" with its catchy line, "I will carry you through the hurricane waters, and I'll remember you in the blue skies".Also, the clear favorite of the setlist was "Son's Gonna Rise", off of The Clarence Greenwood Recordings.

He also did "Healing Hands", from the new The Rainwater LP (released March 2nd via Rainwater Recordings), which actually sounds a bit reggae towards the end of the song. The song is available as a free download off his website.

Looking back at Mumford and Sons @ The 400 Bar 9/21/2008 / The May 25th Varsity Show is already Sold Out!

Most of Minneapolis missed out on seeing the future of British folk music at the 400 Bar last evening, with only around 75 people witnessing the wonderful triple bill of Mumford and Sons, Laura Marling, and Johnny Flynn. It’s a shame, because all three young bands bring a fresh and youthful perspective to the singer/songwriter genre, and if this show took place in England, they would have sold out a much larger venue than the 400 Bar. But it was a nice, intimate show that really showcased three talented songwriters with wonderful voices.

First on the bill and last but not least was Mumford and Sons, fronted by Marcus Mumford (who would later play drums for Laura Marling’s band). They played a lively, spirited set despite the fact that there were only a small handful of fans in attendance. A few of their early jokes fell a little flat on the quiet crowd (one was about how the haven’t heard anyone say ‘Yah,’ in Minnesota yet) causing the electric banjo player to kiddingly remark that “This is as far away from home I’ve ever been. And the farthest away from home I’ve ever felt.” But the crowd and the band warmed to each other nicely, and the group really hit their stride on tracks like the jubilant ‘Roll Away Your Stone,’ and the sorrowful ‘White Blank Page.’ They played predominantly without drums (save for a bass drum that the singer occasionally kicked while playing), and that allowed for the strong vocals of Marcus to shine through, setting a wonderful opening tone on a night filled with distinctive and rich voices.

I was surprised to see Laura Marling and her band setting up next, for I thought her recent Mercury Music Prize nomination for her album “Alas I Cannot Swim,” would entitle her to be the headliner. But the unassuming 18 year old settled in quickly, opening her set with the evocative ‘Ghosts,’ that was augmented quite well by her full band behind her (as opposed to the sparse solo acoustic version I saw her play on Jools Holland.) She has a true gift as both a songwriter and a singer, and both of her gifts were on full display last evening, with her beguiling voice singing the intricate and often heartbreaking lyrics of lost love and exploration that belies her young age. She has a rather diminutive stage presence (standing cross- legged and rarely looking directly at the audience), but her full, resonant voice more than makes up for her timidity, filling the club with the sounds of her sorrow and her dreams.

She also played two lovely new songs for us last evening, 'Rambling Man,' and 'Alpha Shallows,' (although she joked with the crowd, declaring that “All these songs are new to you, really.”) And I’m sure there were a few people in the audience that were discovering Laura Marling last night, being treated to the beauty of her songs for the first time. ‘My Manic And I,’ is as dynamic and complete a song as I’ve heard recently, a unique study of human relationships, depression, God, and love, all in a three and a half minute pop-song that was the highlight of the set for me. Laura truly is a singular musical talent, who hopefully will continue to flourish for years to come within the confines of the music industry, providing us with many more albums filled with her distinctive music and insightful lyrics, and hopefully more shows in Minneapolis, that ought to be better attended as her name recognition grows.

Johnny Flynn and his band, ‘The Sussex Wit,’ have songs that should be (and probably are, in his native England) pub anthems, and the sparsely filled and relatively quiet 400 Bar didn’t necessarily suit his rousing songs. But again, we were treated to an intimate glimpse of a songwriter whose lyrics are filled with a depth of knowledge and insight that is at odds with his young age (only 25,) and he and his seasoned band rolled through most of the tracks from his excellent album, ‘A Larum,’ in a stirring set. His songs and lyrics are steeped in Englishness, causing me to think of, and miss, jolly ole’ England throughout his set.

The electric banjo once again was featured prominently in the music, as was the cello, violin, and trumpet, and those instruments added to the festive but mournful nature of the songs. ‘Brown Trout Blues,’ was a despondent, melancholy highlight of the set, with lyrics about being happy with who we are, even when that is not enough for the people we love. ‘Cold Bread,’ was another standout of the set that would have been better served with a Saturday night whiskey-soaked crowd (as opposed to a rather subdued Sunday night crowd) that could have turned this into the rousing sing-along that the song deserves and probably is with an audience more familiar with his music and lyrics. But it was an altogether engaging set, filled with the feisty, spirited songs of Johnny Flynn, a talented songwriter that we should hear more from in the future.

It was a great triple-bill last evening at the 400 Bar, one where the bands were all friends, shared instruments and even swapped performers, and all of the acts displayed their own unique and fresh talents that will take the future of British music in whatever direction they choose. It’s just too bad more people weren’t there to witness it. But those of us that were will consider ourselves lucky to have seen the start of what should be flourishing musical careers from all of the artists on stage last night.

Mr. Clarence Greenwood, a.k.a Citizen Cope, was unbelievable for his final performance at the sold out Bowery Ballroom. This dude not only played for over two hours, it was also his 6th old out show in a row in New York City. Yes he's lives in Brooklyn now but that's impressive my friends. Clarence even whipped out a Radiohead cover, "Karma Police". And singing alongside for 3-4 tracks was opener Alice Smith, who has some great range.

Cope will be in Minneapolis for two shows Saturday March 6th and Sunday the 7th. The 6th is sold out but tickets are still available for the Sunday show. Check him out!

The lesson was a combination of guitar skills and the ever so easy learning Norwegian language. Sondre Lerche was quite the character on stage and was very open to the screaming fans. I was hoping for some better new tracks and a longer set, but come on we can't all be picky. Either way Sondre can sure sing and it's always entertaining watching him perform.

Her name is Paz Lenchantin and she's played with just about everybody from Queens of the Stone Age to Jenny Lewis. She's now teamed up with Guy Blakeslee to form a dynamic trio. The bands name is called "The Entrance Band". This psychedelic rock band is straight out of 1970's where hippies were running wild. These guys truly come from L.A. where everything becomes a reality.

Music Go Music have been getting a lot of great press, especially coming off a Franz Ferdinand UK tour - and they are heading back for two dates in London. A reader asked me to look into them and after checking out their live performance on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic, I was hooked.

This band's sound seems to be influenced by 60s pop and ABBA-esque melodies, as I have previously mentioned on our podcast. Of course, I hadn't done any research on that podcast, I thought only the Swedish were re-inventing 60s pop, but apparently so are Americans, as Music Go Music are based in Los Angeles.

Formulaically, Music Go Music got everything right for me. "Repeating" band name for memory, check (you really have to hear my theory or read about it.) Danceable melodies, check. Lovely girl singer/lovelier voice, check and double check.

Between the three singles (all with very similar legs artwork), I'm more drawn to their first single "Light of Love", mostly for that "whoa-whoa-whoa" chorus. It is the first song I've heard from them, so the song has a soft spot in my heart.

"Reach Out" is good, but it seems to lag nearly one minute (2:49 to 3:43 mark), before that "galloping" disco sound picks the song back up. Maybe that boring minute is there to remind me of how awesome the rest of the song is? Apology to the guitarist for playing that solo.

Their latest single is "Warm in the Shadows", a mini-epic of a song at nearly 10 minutes. Fans of Eurodisco, like myself, will love this song for its mindless big beat and bass. Especially with singer Gala Bell's vocals, you can play this song to someone and tell them it's Blondie - and they'd believe you. If you don't believe me, check out the song as a free download from their record label.

If I might suggest, their fourth single* should be "Explorers Of The Heart" and not "Just Me"? I can see why they'd perform "Just Me" on Face Time, as that song works as a live song... To see more videos from Face Time, head over to their youtube.

I also wanted to mention that some of their songs are very complicated, like layers of electronic synth, disco sounds - but it doesn't sound dense or unlistenable. In fact, quite the opposite.

Expressions is out now, you can get it from their record label, Secretly Canadian. If there were a band that would make me leave my Winter hibernation, it would be for Music Go Music, so I'm eagerly waiting for them to come to Minneapolis!

* I suspect releasing four or five singles from an album of nine songs might be stretching it.

Alberta Cross Rock out @ The 400 Bar 1/27/10

Alberta Cross lived up the hype, and the fact that they've opened for the likes of Oasis and DMB. I would describe them as a mix between UK finest, THE MUSIC and Band of Skulls. Solid set. Lead singer was from Sweden, bass player from England, and apparently some from Brooklyn.

The 400 bar is set to have many more stellar shows this winter so stay tuned.
