Whomever Brody McCoy was, he had reason to be proud. Last night’s show, the first ever presented by Brit Rock at the Top, was a great success. McCoy is a Shoreview native, but as its name suggests his blog celebrates all things British and rockin’; the thread meant to tie the night’s three acts—Joey Ryan and the Inks, Sika, and Victory Ship—was a degree of trans-Atlantic affinity.

Unfortunately I missed Joey Ryan’s set; when I arrived, Sika were onstage. As promised, their music reflected a range of British influences—notably the more theatrical Brit rockers, from Queen to Radiohead.

SIKA @ The Back Room(Sigur Ros After Party) 10/24/08

SIKA once again brought in a crowd with a little help from the new Sigur Ros Film and A Whisper in the Noise, another great local band. The new Sigur Ros film "Heima" premiered last night turning this show in a Sigur Ros Party. Both SIKA and A Whisper in the Noise are largely influenced by the outstanding band from Iceland. Sigur Ros played in Minneapolis last month in support of their new record and film.

SIKA steals the show from Secret Machines 7/19/08

The Fineline Music Cafe has been known to have incredible light shows. SIKA kept that going and took full advantage of the flashing strobe lights. Really maturing as a band their getting extremely comfortable playing in front of big crowds. Lead singer Aleksey Zharinov is sounding more and more like Thom Yorke. Ok maybe not that good. Either way they stole the show from a very disappointing performance by Secret Machines.

Secret Machines clearly needs Ben Curtis and his dynamic stage presence back in front of the flashing lights. Unfortunately Ben who was lead guitarist and vocals has left to work on his side project. Ben left the band in March 07. Brother Brandon still has a great voice, but too much has been lost. This is just your average jam band from NYC. The crashing fall has begun for Secret Machines.

The Helio Sequence / The Alarmists / SIKA @ First Ave. 5/14/08

Benjamin Wiekel, drummer for The Helio Sequence, has to be the best drummer I've seen.  Even better than Ringo Starr, oh yea! Fortunatley Ben doesn't try to sing like Ringo, but is extremely animated. Benjamin also has played with Modest Mouse.  The other half and front man of Helio is Brandon Summers, another extremely talented performer.  

As soon as Helio Sequence started I raced to the front of the crowd and immediately was loving the sound. It is amazing what two guys from Portland can do on stage.  Ben and Brandon need to keep writing and continue touring so more fans can witness greatness.

                                               THE ALARMISTS

The Alarmists are still the best Minneapolis local band at the moment.  They're only planning on playing about 5 shows this summer, as they'll look to do more recording and set up for a midwest fall tour.  "Car Crashing" and "You're Right" are two catchy new singles on their spring singles EP.

SIKA is a  very talented local group going for a Muse/Radiohead sound.  Catch them at England Swings this Saturday May 17th at 8pm @ The Triple Rock where they will play some Muse and Radiohead.

4 Great Local bands at the best venue in the cities.  I heard that their will be background video during some of the sets.  SIKA can easily be compared to the likes of radiohead and muse. Coyotes is a new local band with lead singer Aaron Miller coming from the recently broken up band Airports and Atlases.  Go check out some rock n roll tonight.
