Sia plays in front of Sell Out Crowd in Minneapolis 4/24/10

Sia arrived on stage with a glowing unicorn light-up horn on her head. The horn lit up in different colors, controlled by a switch, during her intro song, "The Fight". This is followed by her previous intro song, "Buttons", the hidden gem off of Some People Have Real Problems.

A lot of her songs on this set was from her forth-coming album, We Are Born, to be released in June by Jive Records. Based on what I've heard, they are really quite good. Particularly impressed by "Clap Your Hands" and "The Codependent".

Her new record, "We Are Born" will hit record stores and ITunes June 7. You can preview 6 songs/videos from the new record on her MYSPACE Page

Big thanks to the Fine Line for letting us host a great show. It was too bad more people didn't show, but come on it was a Tuesday.. All 3 bands were great. You could really tell Now, Now Every Children has developed a bigger sound after playing in front of 100,000+ crowds in Europe.

(There he is folks Minnesota Rock Legend, Gabe Douglas) (*photos by Sarah Montour and Mike Minehart)
Gabe describing the Envy Corps, "Radiohead with a splash of Coldplay and sprinkles of Modest Mouse". He threw another band in there but I've forgotten the name. Anyways Gabe and I rocked out to easily the best individual set of the year. The Envy Corps whipped out all the hits from their recent sophomore release "Dwell", along with a brand new dance tune. The only downfall to the set, was it was short and they only played half of the new record. This was the third time catching the band and was easily the best. It is truly amazing how an already outstanding band can continue improving with each performance.
The Envy Corps come from Ames, Iowa. They piece together some of the best music known to man. Led by Luke Pettipoole, Minneapolis got to witness the new Thom Yorke. And yes I would compare "Dwell" to "The Bends". I give a lot of credit to White Light Riot and The Melsmatics for bringing them on board and of course the Fineline for quality sound and a very nice venue. The man that deserves the most thanks is Matt Perkins who introduced me to these guys last december at the Nomad. I'm planning a road trip to catch them in Madison. Who's in? Better catch them now! The Envy Corps will be working on a new record heading into 09! Cheers -Brody

Calling all Detroit Rock City fans, was a 5 piece band called The Silent Years. They started the night off for the Melsmatics CD Release Party last Sat. night at the Fineline. Lead singer Josh Epstein used a old school phone and a few other random gadgets to mix in a unique sound. He really tried to get the crowds attention when he raced into the crowd, jumped up on the bar and started jammin on his guitar. I think it worked. The band backed him up nicely to put together some high quality indie-rock. They even brought up their good friends The Envy Corps, to make sure those tambourines were well stuck on stage.

The Silent Years have been picking up some buzz with their first release back in January, a studio set on KCRW, and quite a bit of touring in support of their record "The Globe". The Silent Years might be back in Minneapolis Dec? Anybody know?

SIKA steals the show from Secret Machines 7/19/08

IMG_1863

The Fineline Music Cafe has been known to have incredible light shows. SIKA kept that going and took full advantage of the flashing strobe lights. Really maturing as a band their getting extremely comfortable playing in front of big crowds. Lead singer Aleksey Zharinov is sounding more and more like Thom Yorke. Ok maybe not that good. Either way they stole the show from a very disappointing performance by Secret Machines.

For all the SIKA photos check out My Flickr Page

Aleksey ZIMG_1849IMG_1867

Secret Machines clearly needs Ben Curtis and his dynamic stage presence back in front of the flashing lights. Unfortunately Ben who was lead guitarist and vocals has left to work on his side project. Ben left the band in March 07. Brother Brandon still has a great voice, but too much has been lost. This is just your average jam band from NYC. The crashing fall has begun for Secret Machines.

The Kooks 5/31/08 @ Fineline Music Cafe

The Kooks in Minneapolis

The Kooks know how to work the crowd; the massive population of girls ear-piercingly screaming throughout their sold out show at the Fine Line on Saturday. The band played an hour-plus show with a healthy mix of old and new, fast and slow.

The foursome showed its range, mixing the harder rock with the slower bluesy songs, and incorporating as many old songs as ones off the new album Konk. To start the encore, lead singer Luke Pritchard opened with a few acoustic songs before the rest of the band returned and ended the show on a high note.

Notably absent from the setlist was "She Moves in Her Own Way," but other than that the Brighton, UK-based-band played the best of their repertoire. From the new album, the band played its first single off Konk "Always Where I Want to Be," which reached No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart, and other upbeat songs including "Do You Wanna" and "Stormy Weather," and then slower songs like "Mr. Maker" and latest single "Shine On."

IMG_1077IMG_1079IMG_1063

It was fun to hear a good mix of older songs. For the successes of Konk, there is a little missing from Inside in Inside Out. Among the older songs mixed in were "I Want You Back," "Eddies Gun," and "Naive."

Most English bands coming to the Twin Cities have a solid but mostly cult audience. Not here. A diverse group, most singing along with every song, welcomed the band. The quality of music was great too, exactly what you want in a live show, like the album but with more edge.

I have an inkling that the Kooks know what they are doing; the next time it will be bigger.

But whatever happened to a concert for the music? A fun show was occasionally dulled by the hoard of teenage girls front and center more interested in documenting that yes, they actually were at the show, than enjoying it. I guess that's the territory that comes with a band like this.

David Ford in Minneapolis 5/12/08 @ The Fine Line

IMG_0452

David Ford has toured with just about everyone and is a rougher version of David Gray. Unlike Gray, Ford plays more guitar than piano and is a master at looping. It was a sold out show at the Fine Line and most of the crowd was their to witness Fords set. Although Fords set was short, he sure put everything he had into his set. Belting out into multiple microphones, throwing his broken string into the crowd (along with his hat), were just some of the examples of effort. I'm generaly not into a rough folky singer, but David Ford really forces fans to embrace his power on stage. Lets hope he comes back with a band like Starsailor or Doves next time touring the U.S. Ford's new record came out in the U.S. April 1st and is titled "Songs For The Road", go buy it's good.
