Photo Reel of 2nd Annual 80/35 Music Fest in Des Moines Iowa!

What a way to celebrate Independence Day! Great Bands. Fireworks. Brats and Beer. You name it, they had it! All this fun and excitement happened in Des Moines, Iowa for the second annual Open Air Music Festival (80/35). 3 big stages and over 40 bands, flooded the streets of downtown with the 10,000+ crowd. Even with the rain on friday and saturday the bands fought threw it and gave everyone a warm welcome.
The highlight of the festival was Des Moines very own, The Envy Corps playing at the Meredith West Stage. The crowd invaded the blocked off press area and eventually started a stage invasion after the band called them up. Well over 2,000 people, fans flooded the big alley way, stood on roof tops, and of course took the stage with the band. Trust me these guys are up their with the big shots, i.e. Radiohead, Editors, White LIes, and many others.

Kicking with The Envy Corps for two shows in Ames 2/6/09

The Envy Corps - Story Problem from Brody McCoy on Vimeo.
Yes folks thats Gabe Douglas, from the Minneapolis band 4 on the floor. He joined the party for the track "Story Problem". We road tripped it down to Ames Iowa to catch the early and late show by The Envy Corps at the M-Shop. Luke, Brandon, and the rest of the band whipped out all the moves with plenty of new tracks. The Envy Corps are due for a new record sometime this year summer/fall. Can't wait. Lets hope they make it back up to Minneapolis.

The Envy Corps and The Silent Years @ Fineline 10/11/08 (Minneapolis)

The Envy Corps (Iowa)

(There he is folks Minnesota Rock Legend, Gabe Douglas) (*photos by Sarah Montour and Mike Minehart)
Gabe describing the Envy Corps, "Radiohead with a splash of Coldplay and sprinkles of Modest Mouse". He threw another band in there but I've forgotten the name. Anyways Gabe and I rocked out to easily the best individual set of the year. The Envy Corps whipped out all the hits from their recent sophomore release "Dwell", along with a brand new dance tune. The only downfall to the set, was it was short and they only played half of the new record. This was the third time catching the band and was easily the best. It is truly amazing how an already outstanding band can continue improving with each performance.
The Envy Corps come from Ames, Iowa. They piece together some of the best music known to man. Led by Luke Pettipoole, Minneapolis got to witness the new Thom Yorke. And yes I would compare "Dwell" to "The Bends". I give a lot of credit to White Light Riot and The Melsmatics for bringing them on board and of course the Fineline for quality sound and a very nice venue. The man that deserves the most thanks is Matt Perkins who introduced me to these guys last december at the Nomad. I'm planning a road trip to catch them in Madison. Who's in? Better catch them now! The Envy Corps will be working on a new record heading into 09! Cheers -Brody

The Silent Years (Detroit)
Calling all Detroit Rock City fans, was a 5 piece band called The Silent Years. They started the night off for the Melsmatics CD Release Party last Sat. night at the Fineline. Lead singer Josh Epstein used a old school phone and a few other random gadgets to mix in a unique sound. He really tried to get the crowds attention when he raced into the crowd, jumped up on the bar and started jammin on his guitar. I think it worked. The band backed him up nicely to put together some high quality indie-rock. They even brought up their good friends The Envy Corps, to make sure those tambourines were well stuck on stage.
The Silent Years have been picking up some buzz with their first release back in January, a studio set on KCRW, and quite a bit of touring in support of their record "The Globe". The Silent Years might be back in Minneapolis Dec? Anybody know?

The Envy Corps @ Peoples Court in Des Moines 5/21!

The Envy Corps played like shooting stars in front a immense local crowd. Performing the entire Dwell record in order, they finished the night with the best covers I've heard all time. The Verve(Bittersweet Symphony), New Order, and Led Zepplin(well it sounded like Led) were the 3 bands they covered during their spectacular encore.
Lead singer Luke Pettipoole and lead guitarist, Brandon Darner have entered another world in their lives, with their music and families. Luke might start a side project with a member of The Silent Years this summer. The band will be working hard on writing the new record over the next year and will enjoy a break from touring and travel. Reading and Leeds Festivals(U.K. in August) are in the works, along with a festival with The Flaming Lips in States this summer.. Lets hope The Envy Corps stay together for a long time, and capture their dream and soon someday open for Radiohead.

Interview with The Envy Corps + Preview for Des Moines 5/21 Gig

Lead singer, Luke Pettipoole was nice of to take the time to answer some questions..
Congrats on the new release Dwell! Any predictions on record sales in U.S. and U.K.? It's the album of the year in my opinion.
Well it isn't out in the U.S. yet, but we did a soft release in the U.K. last month. I don't have wild expectations for sales, but I think it will be a grower.
Your lyrics and sound are inspiring to all your fans, how else will you inspire people?
I don't think we have any other agenda as far as inspiration other than our songs. None of us are politicians or martyrs.
You've switched around a few band members including the Yoshimura brothers, how have you been able to stay together with change?
I think the heart of the band is really the three people that are in it now. As long as we stick together The Envy Corps will live on. We have other people play with us live because we detest backing tracks, plus it's a lot more fun. I see the band continuing as more of a collective than a standard 4 or 5 piece.
Recently leaving the Eisley tour, was the decision made because you didn't like the crowds on the Eisley tour, the offer to play in the U.K was to good, or something else? Eisley loved you guys, I chatted with them after the show.
That was a real tough one. We did not want to leave the Eisley tour, in fact we prefer American crowds, but we had to go at our label's request. When you're a struggling band like us you still have to play the game sometimes.

Knowing The Envy Corps is pronounced envy core, it still sounds like corpse, a.k.a. a metal name. Can you become a huge band with that name?
Even if it is confusing to those without a tight grasp on English, it's still a better band name than most. It suits us just fine.
You've played with the Editors and The Courteeners in the U.K. what other new U.K. band would you like to play with?
Radiohead
If you weren't so precious, I'd have said "Off with your head" is a line from the song Party Dress. Explain that incredible line?
It's about being in a position to completely destroy a bitter enemy, but you realize that they are so feeble and weak minded that you pity them instead.
Did Luke really write a song in jail? If yes, details...
It's a rumor. We are all law-abiding citizens.
Is Peoples Court your favorite place to play a show? And how big will this hometown show be on the 21st?
Our favorite place to play is still the Vaudeville Mews. The vibe is so inviting...we played all our first shows there. The problem is it's just too small. People's is a great venue that can hold a few more people.
I'm going down with my friend Lydia to see these guys in Des Moines tomorrow night and jumping off the walls. Imagine Radiohead and Modest Mouse at the Varsity Theater(small venue). The Envy Corps are on a very big high after the best release of 2008("Dwell"), it will be a real pleasure to see them perform. The band will be ready to play for their hometown fans at I'm sure a sold out show at People's Court.

The Envy Corps release 1st album, but leave U.S. tour.

The Envy Corps, who come from Iowa, are one of the best new acts of 07-08. They've recently made a big fan base in Europe which is why they left the Eisley U.S. Tour which just started this month. They've been playing shows over the last year in England with Editors, The Hoosiers, and now get to play some shows with The Courteeners in London.
Some good news for U.S. fans the Envy Corps first full length album (Dwell) will be out in the states next Monday April 28th. Their single Story Problem is available on iTunes right now.
Watch this awesome interview with the band..
